Better IT security for no extra cost

A growing number of routine security functions can be performed at no extra cost by service providers

Businesses have an opportunity to reduce IT security costs while improving security levels by taking advantage of convergence in technologies, according to Gartner.

In a new report, the industry analyst highlights this and other ways that chief information security officers (CISOs) and their teams can maintain or enhance security at minimal cost.

Gartner points out that CISOs and other security professionals need to be prepared for severe budget constraints should the expected economic downturn materialise.

The report says a growing number of routine security functions can be performed at reduced - or no extra - cost by existing network carriers and internet service providers.

Gartner also urges CISOs to make a clear distinction between IT security - which is a strategic discipline - and routine security functions which can be performed by IT operations, enabling IT security experts to focus on newer and more sophisticated threats.

The report also recommends that security professionals should use their buying power to force IT sellers to deliver more secure products and services, as another way of reducing costs.
