Mobile calls allowed in-flight
|
Norwegian operator Telenor has announced it is behind the launch of the world's first authorised in-flight mobile phone calls on a commercial flight.
It says the AeroMobile system is the result of a research and innovation project and has been launched as a joint venture with transport communications and systems engineering solutions provider ARINC. It enables passengers to use their personal mobile phones during flights, with calls billed directly to their existing mobile phone accounts as international roaming calls. Telenor says the facility was introduced on an Emirates Airline flight between Dubai and Casablanca last week, following the granting of approval from all relevant aviation authorities. Telenor says field studies and market research clearly show there is strong interest in in-flight mobile communications, particularly among business travellers and frequent flyers. Telenor senior vice-president - and chairman of the board of AeroMobile - Bjarne Aamodt said: "Most people appreciate the ability to communicate in all situations. AeroMobile is a natural extension of Telenor's mobile service offering and we are proud to be at the forefront of this emerging market.”
