When Mark Jackson scored his first try at Murrayfield, he had no idea just how proud he’d made his BT dad.

As the 15-year-old rugby captain led his team out on to the playing field, dad Ian was cheering him on from the sidelines.

And, although Perthshire Rugby Club lost to Boroughmuir, the young team’s stadium stint was still a dream come true for the family.

The youngster tackled his first rugby match at eight and has been supported by Ian, a BT Scotland partnership director, throughout his sporting years.

Ian has even applied for funding from the BT Community Champions scheme over the years for help to buy new strips and equipment.

His son’s team qualified for the National Club Championships after winning the semi-final against Currie in March.

And, although the Edinburgh side took the champions’ title with a winning score of 25-17, Ian is delighted with his son’s runner-up medal.

He said: “It was a great day out and the team did very well. Mark had a lot of family and friends from Perth supporting him.

“It was a hard-fought game which could’ve gone either way, and Mark narrowly missed out on being named Man of the Match.

“Everything was professionally organised, from the training schedules to speeches at the meal on the night before the game.

“The club president even presented the lads with their jerseys before they boarded the bus for Edinburgh.”

Ian, who was a keen hockey player in his youth, is delighted that his son has followed in his sporting footsteps.

And Mark will now leave the young Eagles to touchdown with the Perthshire Colts team.
