New green title up for grabs

BT Scotland is giving enterprising youngsters the chance to scoop a new accolade for going green.
It has launched an award for the Best Environmentally Responsible Business as part of its Young E-ntrepreneurs scheme. The new title complements the existing awards for Most Visionary Business, Best Website and Best Use of E-Commerce. The company has also increased its investment in the scheme, which is organised by the Prince’s Scottish Youth Business Trust (PSYBT), to £55,000 for the year. Having already invested more than £300,000 in the programme, BT Scotland has helped more than 125 young entrepreneurs develop and grow their own businesses. The extra cash will help the PSYBT to provide set-up costs for around 15 new businesses across the country over the next 12 months. Former award winner Nick Lobritz set up environmentally-responsible business Carry Freedom in 2004. Ayrshire-based Nick, 28, founded the company - which supplies lightweight innovative bicycle trailers - with the help of a PSYBT loan. Over the past four years, he has succeeded in securing distribution partners in various countries and has developed products such as budget and bamboo trailers for bicycles. This year, he’s launching his first bicycle - a maintenance-free urban utility bike. Nick said: “With the support of PSYBT, in conjunction with BT Scotland, I’ve been able to market my products more widely to a mainstream audience, which would otherwise have taken much longer to achieve. “We’ve significantly expanded the business in terms of product development and selling to new territories and are now the primary trailer supplier for the Royal Mail, which is helping us do business with the Norwegian, Swedish and French postal services. “For us, being environmentally responsible is at the heart of what we do as a business. “Our product itself is all about travelling without a car and we constantly aim to reduce our own carbon footprint by minimising our resources, using suppliers who share our environmental values and continuously reviewing the way in which we work and how we manufacture our products. “I think it’s our responsibility, as a successful and sustainable business, to consider the environment in every aspect of what we do.”
