Openreach in the South West has demonstrated its commitment to improving communication in the community with the successful conclusion of its First Mile initiative.
Performance analyst Caroline Dartnall said: “We are the only region that managed to donate our entire budget and we awarded grants totalling £19,980, which has been split between eight schools in the South West.” In Westward, six schools received cash awards, including Greenfield Centre, Bodmin, nominated by Peter Hunkin. It was given £2,050 for trophies to recognise the most improved communicators and users of information communication technology, plus some specialised IT equipment. Ellen Tinkham School, Exeter, nominated by Bob Challacombe, was awarded £4,811. Ellen Tinkham supports children from three to 19 with a wide range of severe learning disabilities. The money was spent on specialist equipment for pupils with little sight plus equipment to benefit pupils with problems with communication. Other awards went to Alphington Pre-School, Exeter; Orchard Vale School, Barnstaple; Tic Tocs Nursery, Exeter; and South Brent Pre-School, South Devon, In Severnside, the Little Foxes Nursery in Chippenham, which was nominated by John Lake, received £684 to provide specialist IT equipment and software for pre-school children with special educational needs to improve their personal and social skills. Caroline added: “All the equipment that has been purchased will benefit the younger children in our community for many years, improving their communication and social skills, and will link the Openreach brand to the support given to all the children.”
