BT helps group carry on camping

A scout group in Devon will be able to buy new camping equipment for its weekend moorland treks - thanks to a cash award from BT.
The Torridge District Explorer Scouts received £310 from the BT Community Champions award scheme after deputy leader Grahame Mather sent in an application. Grahame, who works as a customer service engineer in Bideford, has been involved with the group for 25 years. He said: “We have 14 to 18-year-olds in the group, and my responsibility is to train them in moorland walking. The stuff we do is very similar to the Duke of Edinburgh awards and is a lot of fun.” This is not the first Community Champions money that Grahame has received for the scouts - the walkie talkies that the group uses when it is out on the moors were paid for with a previous award. Grahame added: “When we get windfalls like this it really is like manna from heaven. It is so difficult to raise the cash we need through normal routes like car boot sales, so it is great that BT has helped us out again.”
