Portsmouth Central telephone exchange went football crazy for a day when they were asked to support the Tom Prince Cancer Trust.
“Tom Prince was a young, fanatical Pompey supporter, who was befriended by Harry Redknapp and the players, and often invited to their training sessions,” said Openreach damage control manager Ian Blackburn. “Harry also gave Tom a bulldog puppy, before he died at the age of 16. “To raise cash for the charity named in his honour, we had a Blue Day event which encouraged everyone to wear blue for a day to mark Pompey's semi-final appearance at Wembley. “In our office, a football theme day was also held with hot dogs and other football match day goodies, all provided for a donation.” The Blue Day was organised by the town’s local newspaper. More than 250 companies and organisations pledged their support to raise money to help save teenagers from osteosarcoma, the bone cancer that Tom died from the day before his 16th birthday. Since Tom's death in October 2004, his parents Clinton and Adele have worked tirelessly to reach the £1 million target they set themselves when they set up the Tom Prince Cancer Trust to fund research to find a cure for the cancer that mainly affects teenagers. The Openreach events, organised by Sue Walker, raised £130 during the day.
