Working temperature is a hot topic

A joint approach between BT Operate, BT Design, Openreach and others, is leading to an improvement in working conditions in exchange buildings.

In recent years, buildings have become increasingly packed with equipment, generating more and more heat. And concerns have been raised about the need to maintain a comfortable working temperature, especially in summer.

So BT Operate people along with representatives from BT Design, Openreach, health and safety, security and property got together for a seminar on the subject.

Network design and re-engineering director Simon Hunt said: “The seminar helped us gain a shared understanding of the issues and who was responsible for resolving them.

“We are now working closely with BT Operate to make improvements ahead of the summer months.”

The worst 20 exchanges for temperature problems have now been surveyed with designs in place to improve the situation in the coming months.

Provision for temporary cooling systems to be made available for another 100 exchanges is also under way.

Simon said: “We’ll continue to work together to make our response to these issues business as usual. Engineers should know that, if they raise an issue, it will be taken seriously, acted on and sorted out quickly.”
