VIP guests witness innovations

Visitors from Whitehall saw some of the latest innovations and technology from BT at an event at Adastral Park.

Organised by BT Group public affairs and the chief technology office, the bi-annual event was hosted by chief scientist Mike Carr. Among the guests were officials from government departments, including the Home Office, Treasury and the Department for Children, Schools and Families. They were accompanied by members of the technology strategy board and the parliamentary office of science and technology.

Innovations on show included BT Balance, a small adaptor that can be plugged into any laptop or PC, enabling users to navigate around the screen by tilting or moving their machine, eliminating the need for a keyboard or mouse.

It’s the brainchild of Adam Oliver, BT Group’s head of corporate responsibility, David Chatting, facial communications researcher, and concept designer Martin Trimby. Adam demonstrated the device, as well as presenting on corporate social responsibility and digital inclusion issues.

BT Group accessibility and usability technical research consultant Tim Pennick was also on hand to explain haptic software for the visually impaired, which enables the use of computers via the sense of touch.

There were also presentations on broadband technology trends by BT Group principal strategic analyst Alan Sayles, and a glimpse into future lifestyle and technology trends by BT Group futurologist Jonathan Mitchener.

“The programme was underpinned by an exhibition of BT applications in the mobility next-generation broadband video/TV and digital inclusion arenas,” said Mike Carr. “All of this stimulated a high level of interest and requests for follow-up meetings back in London.”
