Footy fans get the blues for a good cause

Adastral Park people turned up for work wearing football shirts - and got themselves fined for the privilege.

But it was all in a good cause, as the fines were actually donations to the Somebody's Daughter appeal, launched by Ipswich Borough Council and the Evening Star. The appeal was made as a legacy to the five women murdered by Steve Wright - Tania Nicol, Gemma Adams, Anneli Alderton, Annette Nicholls and Paula Clennell.

“The newspaper called on firms in the area to encourage staff to wear their football shirts to work,” said organiser Barry Calver from service management provision. “The principal aim of the charity is to fund a safe house for young women who are deemed to be seriously at risk.

“Ipswich Town fans were asked to contribute £1 for wearing their shirts, but Norwich fans could also take part, providing they paid a £2 fine.

“Through the generosity of those at Adastral Park, wearing or even not wearing football shirts, we managed to collect £175.”

He said that up until BT’s efforts, Ipswich Borough Council had raised the highest amount - £150 - so he wanted to thank all those who donated to the appeal and helped to top the council’s amount.
