Climate change at centre of debate

BT North East regional manager Simon Roberson took part in a debate at the North East Chamber of Commerce partners event where Minister of State for the Environment Phil Woolas was the guest speaker.

Mr Woolas, who has responsibilities for climate change, energy and sustainable development, gave an update on Government plans for tackling climate change, the future of energy supplies in the UK and how businesses can play a role to ensure that the UK remains globally competitive.

The minister answered a range of questions from members on the challenges that climate change poses for the North East.

Simon took the opportunity to showcase the successful Workwise North East campaign for flexible working, which is backed by BT and recently celebrated its first anniversary.

Workwise NE has established a strong foothold among leading employers, gathering support from across the public and private sector. It highlights how working smarter can increase productivity, improve staff morale and have a profound impact on the growing congestion affecting the region.

Simon pointed out that traffic congestion issues that have hit the North East headlines recently lead to increased costs to business, wasted time for employees commuting and damage to the environment.

“The region’s employers can exploit widely available technology like broadband, wireless and teleconferencing to work more flexibly - saving costs and benefiting employees and the environment,” he said.
