Mary takes the plunge
|
It’s the point of no return . . . you’ve stepped off the precipice and you’re hanging for a split second in space.
Advisor Mary Welch took a leap for charity by abseiling from the roof of Newport’s Royal Gwent Hospital to raise money for the Sparkle Appeal. The appeal, which is supported by the Mayor of Newport, is aiming to fund a children’s centre at High Cross, Newport, catering for 1,200 disabled patients. A purpose-built children’s centre will cost £6 million to provide a range of assessment, treatment, therapy and leisure facilities for children and their families, all under one roof. The children will come from Newport, Torfaen and Monmouthshire. Mary, who has a young daughter, Ebony, was sponsored by family and friends, and her colleagues at the Factory Road site. They came up trumps - raising £250 so far. She said she was “terrified” when she leapt from the 100-feet tall building, but soon settled into the abseil and seconds later was back on terra firma! “I’ve never done anything like this before and it was a fantastic experience,” she said. The former agency worker, who joined BT full-time in January, responded to an advert asking people to take part in the abseil and decided to give it a go. “I was at the hospital with my daughter and read the notice. It was absolutely worthwhile and after the initial fright, you just get on with it and enjoy it,” Mary said.
