Alarms could help save lives

Newport’s Mary Lockyer is raising funds to help buy carbon monoxide detectors for the homes of elderly people.
Mary, who works for Customer Service in Factory Road, said she aims to raise the money after hearing from Age Concern that the detectors are badly needed in many elderly people’s homes. Mary - who also collects hampers for Age Concern each Christmas - said that many elderly people who are looked after by Age Concern had gas fires and they were often unaware of the potential dangers from not having the alarms fitted. Local firefighters would fit the alarms, although they could not supply them, she added. So this year, as well as putting hampers together, Mary and her BT colleagues will raise money to buy the alarms for local people. Mary recently received £250 from Severn Power’s Community Chest because of her work with Age Concern. She plans to put the money towards this year’s hampers. “I was really pleased with this donation as the £250 will make a huge difference - but now I am thinking of asking team leaders to get their team members to make a small donation to provide these much-needed alarms,” she said. The alarms cost around £19 each. “If any BT people feel they could make a small donation, it would make a real difference,” said Mary. “If each team member gave £1 it would mean that this Christmas pensioners would have an extra present - and one which could help save their lives.”
