Clocking up a new personal best in this year’s Flora London Marathon was the North West's Steve Jones.

Keen marathon runner Steve, a local business manager’s assistant, was delighted to complete the course in 2hrs 54mins 10secs - five minutes faster than his previous best time.

“I had a fantastic weekend,” said Steve. “Nearly everything went to plan apart from when a deaf runner ran into me at mile two and broke my watch so I had to run the race using only the times on the mile markers.

“I was delighted to get a new personal best and finished 662nd out of the 35,000 runners who took part - and came in 57th in my age group.”

Steve was raising money for the British Heart Foundation and was given a boost by his local pub, the Ring o’ Bells in Marple.

“The landlord organised two quiz nights which were a great success and raised £225 of my total so far of £1,175,” said Steve. “I’d like to thank everyone for their support and generosity.”

The London Marathon wasn’t the end of Steve’s running season. Since then he’s taken part in the Blackpool Half-Marathon.

“I finished in 1hr 22mins 13secs and set another new personal best,” said Steve. “I finished 25th overall - I seem to be getting faster in my old age.”

And, if that’s not enough, Steve’s taking part in the Brathay Windermere Marathon on Sunday (18 May) and the BT Three Peaks Fellwalking competition on Saturday 14 June.

He will, however, be having a rest in July when he takes the family on holiday to Florida.
