Judging starts on awards

BT Tower

This year’s awards will be presented at a ceremony at the BT Tower

Shortlisting has begun for this year’s BT Chairman’s Awards, with 186 applications each vying for a share of up to £23,000.

The awards are the highest accolade available under the BT Community Champions scheme, with winners selected by BT chairman Mike Rake.

On 9 July, winners will be presented with sums of up to £3,000 for the local community project with which they volunteer - all the entrants are previous winners of BT Community Champions awards that reward BT people for the hours of effort they give freely to the community.

One of those is client business director Ron Smith. He’s been chairman of Evergreen Football Club in Abbot Langley for the past 20 years, and last year won the sports category of the BT Chairman’s Awards.

The resulting £3,000 donation has been spent on ensuring the club’s young players have the support of a coach with Football Association (FA) qualifications at each training session, and that five referees have also been trained to FA standards.

“As a club we now have 16 FA level one coaches and six of these have been trained to level two,” said Ron. “This is a considerable step forward for our club and youth football in the area.

“Evergreen would not have been in a position to have offered the FA coaching or referee training courses without the BT Chairman's Award.”

This year’s awards will be presented by Mike at a ceremony to be held at the BT Tower in London.

Head of BT’s charity programme Beth Courtier said: “Not only are we very proud of our BT Community Champions and BT Chairman’s Awards winners but we are thrilled that our employees across the world are making a significant difference to their local community. I urge any BT person who volunteers in their own time to apply for an award.”

BT Community Champions awards support BT people who have been involved with a voluntary organisation for more than 12 months. They offer the chance to win up to £500 or a full sports kit for a community group, with successful applicants becoming eligible to apply for a BT Chairman’s Award. Applications for the next round of Community Champions awards, which closes on 10 July, can be made through the BT Community Champions website.
