China earthquake update

China quake

The earthquake was felt as far away as Beijing and Bangkok.

BT has confirmed that there have been no BT casualties as a result of the earthquake in China, which has so far claimed the lives of at least 8,000 people.

The earthquake struck yesterday (Monday) in the south western Sichuan province and was felt as far away as Beijing and the Thai capital, Bangkok.

In a joint statement, BT Asia Pacific chief operating officer Kevin Taylor and BT Frontline chairman Steve Ting said: “Our thoughts are with the many thousands of people in China’s Sichuan province who have been affected by the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck the region yesterday.

“While BT does not have offices or employees in the province, BT Frontline has reported that its staff at MDCL Frontline in Chengdu are all accounted for.

“We are presently assessing the situation to decide how we can best assist in relief efforts - and what service restoration measures, if any, are required by our China customers.”

In the meantime, BT has suspended until further notice all travel to Sichuan province.
