At least 60 people were killed in seven bombings in Jaipur
|
BT has confirmed today (Wednesday) that there were no BT casualties in a series of bomb attacks on the Indian city of Jaipur.
Seven bombs went off within minutes of each other yesterday near historic monuments in the old city - a popular tourist destination about 160 miles from the Indian capital New Delhi - killing at least 60 people and injuring more than 150. An eighth bomb was defused. One of the bombs exploded close to Jaipur’s most famous landmark - the historic Hawa Mahal, or palace of winds. A curfew was imposed in Jaipur - known as the pink city - and security was stepped up at airports and railway stations across India. Every BT line of business is represented in India, where BT directly and indirectly employs more than 25,000 people. Following the blasts, the BT Group strategic incident management centre (GSIMC) - set up to deal with emergency incidents - monitored the situation. The GSIMC contacted Ganesh Vanapalli, BT Global Services chief security officer in India, and established that no BT presence in Jaipur had been identified. It also said there were no reports of any impact on customers or the network. The closest BT office to Jaipur is in Gurgaon, New Delhi. Sudhir Narang, country manager for BT's India operations, said: "We offer our condolences to the families of the victims. We are relieved to learn that no BT people were caught up in these bomb attacks."
