BT aid for quake victims

China quake

There are fears the death toll from the earthquake could rise well above 12,000

BT has today (Wednesday) pledged cash aid to help the massive relief effort following this week’s earthquake in China.

BT Asia Pacific and BT Frontline say they will match any donations made by employees - dollar for dollar - up to $50,000 (£25,569).

It follows a similar offer made in support of people in Myanmar (formerly Burma) who have been affected by the Cyclone Nargis disaster.

The earthquake in China struck in the south western Sichuan province on Monday and was felt as far away as Beijing and the Thai capital, Bangkok. The death toll so far stands at more than 12,000 and there are fears it could be much higher.

BT has confirmed that there have been no BT casualties in the earthquake but has suspended until further notice all travel to Sichuan province.

In a joint statement, BT Asia Pacific chief operating officer Kevin Taylor and country manager for Greater China Bill Lam said: “Our thoughts are with the many thousands of people in China’s Sichuan province who have been affected by the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck the region on Monday.

“While BT does not have offices or staff in the province, BT Frontline has reported that its staff at MDCL Frontline in Chengdu and Chongqing are all accounted for.

“We are continuing to assess what service restoration measures, if any, are required by our China customers.”

People in the region who wish to make a donation to the relief effort are asked to contact the finance lead person in their location.
