One of the young attendees gets some hands-on experience

Adastral Park, Martlesham was the venue for a special event to introduce young people with special educational needs (SEN) to the latest technology.
In arranging the event, BT acknowledged that the range of people with special needs and learning difficulties is huge. These include young people who find literacy and numeracy difficult; those who find all forms of communication and comprehension difficult; others with emotional problems; young people with autism; and young people with a mixture of some, or all, of the above. The event was the first of its kind for SEN young people in Suffolk, catering for all types of disability - physical, mental, sensory and combinations of any of these. During the day, each of the visitors had the opportunity to see and get hands on experience of the technology. “I am so proud of our involvement with this event,” said Adam Oliver, head of corporate social responsibility. “It is easy to write a lot of words about how I feel it could have been received by the youngsters, but the smiles on their faces said it all. “During the day we were involved with a massive range of special needs, but each person was spoken to with the same energy from all of us. I am sure the day would have been a memorable one in the children's minds and this reflects so well on us as a company.” Later, one parent wrote to BT to say: “When I spoke to my son about the day, he had obviously been totally enthused by the whole event. On behalf of my son and the other young people attendees, a big thank-you. It makes a huge difference, socially and commercially. So keep doing what you are doing.” This story could win you a prize in our new competition - see BT Today East for Thursday 26 June
