Blue ribbon for engineers

Openreach engineers put on a faultless display at the South West's premier agricultural event this summer - the Royal Bath & West Show at Shepton Mallet, Somerset.

Despite steady rain on the first day, thousands of visitors turned out to see the Princess Royal tour the showground. But by then, engineers Andrew Moxham, Steve George, Gary Brook and Dave Coffee, supported by coach Richard Mayes, had completed most of their work.

“They installed more than 80 lines - over 3km of cable - to serve users including Marks & Spencer, Thomas Cook and Nat West," said operations manager Scott Fraser. "They did a terrific job, demonstrating once again the value of co-operative teamwork.

“Weather conditions at the showground were good leading up to it but, once the show started, there were flash floods."

There were fears the show might have to be cancelled as vehicles churned up the tracks and parking areas, with many cars stuck in the mud as they tried to leave the showground.

But weather conditions improved and visitors were able to tour the show, taking in fashion parades, a parachute display by the Royal Navy Raiders, and a concert by The Wurzels as well as the traditional livestock competitions.
