Big Tick for pioneering scheme

people on the phone in India

Rural farmers using Lifelines India to get information by telephone

A pioneering BT/Cisco supported project that puts rural farmers in India in touch with the latest information has achieved a coveted Big Tick from Business in the Community.

BiTC’s Awards for Excellence are the UK's leading recognition scheme for responsible business, and honour businesses that are having a positive impact on society.

BT’s Lifelines India project was picked by a panel of independent, experienced practitioners to be given a Big Tick in the Power in Partnership category, part of the Community Impact section.

Lifelines, a phone-based information service providing vital information to rural communities in India, is BT’s first international digital inclusion programme.

Until recently, the only source of veterinary and agricultural information for farmers in rural India was through community meetings and agriculture extension workers. The Lifelines initiative enables rural people to get accurate and up-to-date information via a new telephone system, 365 days a year.

BT supports the project with executive leadership and funding, and has also provided commercial and technical expertise.

The company will be presented with its Big Tick award at a special ceremony, and will join other winners at the House of Commons in association at a reception with the All Party Parliamentary Group on Corporate Responsibility.
