BT is calling on the government to introduce legislation on carbon emissions
|
BT is among a group of organisations and individuals that are calling on Prime Minister Gordon Brown to introduce legislation forcing large companies to report their carbon emissions.
They are part of a coalition, led by public affairs group Aldersgate, that is delivering a letter to the Prime Minister criticising the government for watering down an amendment to the Climate Change Bill that demanded the legislation. Environment minister Phil Woolas said last week: "The government is not persuaded that such specific mandatory requirements are an effective means of encouraging reductions." As well as BT, other signatories to the coalition letter include 40 MPs, London Mayor Boris Johnson, Friends of the Earth, Christian Aid, the waste management company Biffa and the Institution of Civil Engineers. The letter states: ”We believe that a common protocol that is consistent with international reporting standards would be a significant driver for change and competitive advantage in the private sector." Earlier this month BT announced it will cut its carbon emissions intensity by 80 per cent across the globe by 2020, setting one of the most aggressive corporate carbon reduction targets worldwide. The company has also published a new model for measuring and tracking carbon emissions - backed by the Carbon Disclosure Project. The Aldersgate Group is a broad coalition of environmental agencies, non-government organisations, think tanks and industry representatives who believe that high environmental standards will be a major part of future economic growth and international competitiveness.
