Saving energy at Faraday

Switched on power

New measures to conserve energy at BT's Faraday building can save almost £80,000 a year

An initiative aimed at conserving energy at BT’s Faraday building in London has been hailed a huge success after it identified how almost £80,000 worth of annual savings could be achieved.

All 416 people based in the building were invited to take part in the exercise and received details of a series of measures they could take to reduce energy consumption.

The event took place during last month’s spring Bank Holiday weekend when members of BT’s energy and carbon management (E&CM) team were on site to share facts about BT’s energy use and discuss opportunities to reduce energy consumption.

Richard Tarboton, BT Operate director for energy and carbon management, said: “Over the weekend they identified a number of energy-saving quick wins and took away a number of energy-saving opportunities in both the network and office areas.”

“These included identifying that we currently have heating pumps running at the same time as the air-conditioning system, so we’re now working on fixing this as quickly as possible.

"The E&CM also found there are 18 air-conditioning units on the network floors that we don’t need at the moment and we’re looking into scaling these back - and this alone could provide a significant potential saving.

“We’d really like to thank everyone at Faraday who did their bit to contribute to the savings. By switching off PC monitors, docking stations, TVs, photocopiers and office lighting over the Bank Holiday weekend, you helped us make energy savings that all add up.”

Here is a reminder of some of the things people throughout BT can do to continue to save energy:

  • see the light - use natural light during the day and, where possible, switch off all unnecessary lights

  • say no to standby - switch off PCs, laptops and screens when they are not in use.

Unplug docking stations and power chargers for laptops and mobile phones

  • think before you print - don’t print documents or e-mails unless it really is necessary. Always print double sided and in black, not colour, if possible

  • take the healthy option - use the stairs rather than the lift if possible and get fitter in the process

  • turn it off - limit the use of other appliances, such as printers, TVs, kettles and fans, and switch off everything when it is not being used.
