Dad inspires Mike’s skydive
Tuesday June 24th 2008.   Posted: 09:00
In September Mike Hubbard will be jumping out of a plane to raise money in memory of his father who died of a rare lung disease at the end of a 30-year career with BT.
Chris Hubbard was a manager in capacity planning at Shrewsbury when he retired due to ill health. He died seven years ago and now Mike, who works in international traffic management at Oswestry, is joining a friend in a tandem skydive to help others with the disease. The pair are hoping to raise around £3,000, with about £1,000 going towards a research charity and the remainder being donated to children’s charity NCH. Mike said: “I’m in the Territorial Army so I’ve done a lot of things but skydiving isn’t one of them - it will be a personal challenge for me.” In the run-up to the skydive Mike is planning other events to add to the fundraising total. He’s organised an evening at The Buttermarket in Shrewsbury on 26 July when local band Solarson will be playing, and another event on 8 August at The Salopian in the town. Mike said: “My dad was well known by a lot of people in BT so we’d welcome support from anyone who feels they’d like to come along to the events or who would like to sponsor the skydive.” Mike and his friend Kerry Price have set up a Just Giving website where people can donate online.
