Groups win thanks to you

The voluntary work of BT people across the Midlands has resulted in 27 community and charity organisations receiving support from the company.

Donations totalling £5,660 have been given to groups in the East and West Midlands in the latest round of awards from the BT Community Champions scheme.

Peter Smith, a network reporting capacity and performance manager in Leicester, is one of those whose voluntary efforts in the community have been recognised with an award.

Peter, who gives his time as a middle-distance running trainer at Leicester Coritanian Athletic Club, said: “All of us at the club are really grateful for the award. The cash grant of £500 from BT will make a real difference to our group and will mean we’re able to purchase athletics equipment and kits. The team will be delighted - and the smart new look is sure to engender a feeling of team spirit and help improve our team performance.”

Maureen Venn, who works at Madley communications centre in Herefordshire, is a trustee and also secretary at the Madley Environmental Study Centre at the site. The 30 hours she volunteers each month have been rewarded with a £315 grant.

“The money will go towards setting up an observatory on the nature reserve - we’ll then be able to upload images to our website allowing everyone to view the stars and planets,” she said. “It’s really great my employer recognises the ongoing commitment we volunteers give to our communities.”

Beth Courtier, head of BT's charity programme, said the company was proud of the many BT volunteers who make a difference to their local community.

“Our BT Community Champions contribute directly to their neighbourhood and their dedication is immense,” she said. “We are delighted to support their volunteering efforts - these awards are just one way of showing how much we value our employees who actively volunteer.”
