A top award from the BT Community Champions award scheme will give extra teaching facilities to a group of air cadets in the region.
The 3 (Helston) Squadron Air Training Corps (ATC) has been given £500, thanks to the efforts of Graham Rogers, who works for BT Operate at Goonhilly satellite earth station in Cornwall. Graham, a civilian instructor with the squadron, says the money will be spent on a laptop computer and navigation software. “A lot of training nowadays is done with PowerPoint presentations and DVDs," he said. Graham has been with the group for 19 years. There are 35 male and female cadets - with ages ranging from 13 to 20 years. “They have a great range of activities, from gliding to air experience flying, from the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme to camping on Dartmoor and overseas,” he said. Graham, whose hobby is shooting, teaches cadets about the safe use of firearms, from air rifles to 7.62mm calibre military rifles. “I was in the Territorial Army for a few years and, since joining the cadets, I have qualified as a shooting instructor and range conducting officer, so I can teach them to shoot accurately and safely,” he added. The squadron is keen to attract new cadets and adult helpers. Anyone who is interested or wants to find out more can e-mail Graham.
