Beth Darby, of White's Wood Lane Junior School in Gainsborough, has scooped the prize for top primary school teacher at the BT-backed 2008 Teaching Awards ceremony in the East Midlands.
BT regional director for the East Midlands Mick McLoughlin presented Beth with the BT award for Teacher of the Year in a Primary School at a ceremony held in the East Midlands Conference Centre, Nottingham. Mick said: “Primary school teachers play a vital role in teaching communication skills at a critical stage in a child’s life "Being able to express yourself clearly and understanding what is being said to you is an essential skill, linked not only to success at school and making friends, but also general wellbeing and, ultimately, employability. Good communication has always been at the heart of teaching.” BT has sponsored the Teaching Awards since their creation ten years ago and the Teacher of the Year in a Primary School award for the past seven years. All the winners from the East Midlands now go on to join their regional counterparts from around the country at the national awards ceremony taking place at the London Palladium in October.
