Proud Gloucester mum Tracey Fairless is anxiously waiting for her daughter to make her international debut at the little-known sport of horseball.
Tracey, an implementation service leader with BT Global Services, is the mother of Caitlin, who has been selected for the Great Britain under-16 squad for the European Horseball Championships. The competition takes place in Portugal at the end of this month. Horseball is a minority sport in Britain, although more popular on the Continent. It is best described as a cross between rugby and basketball on horseback. The aim is to throw a ball through a high net. Tracey said: “Caitlin has been riding horses since she was about five or six, and got into horseball four years ago. She plays for a local team at Newnham on Severn in the Forest of Dean.” There are only about a dozen horseball clubs in the country so the Great Britain team will have to be at its best to make an impression on the tournament. Tracey added: “We are looking for sponsorship, not only for the event itself, but also for the training weekends in the run-up to Portugal. The squad has got a top French coach coming over to train it as a team, which will be vital to its success.” For more information, e-mail Tracey.
