They are the champions
Friday July 18th 2008.   Posted: 09:30
More than £6,000 has been awarded to 31 charity and community groups in the Eastern region in the latest round of BT Community Champions.
The scheme supports and rewards the voluntary work of BT people who commit time, energy and talent for the benefit of society and their communities. Among the latest organisations to benefit were the 1st Earl Soham Scout Group, near Woodbridge, Masterson School Of Irish Dance in St Ives and Redbridge Night Shelter in Ilford. Frames manager Dave Pinney, who volunteers as club secretary at Wilburn Wanderers Girls Football Club in South Ockendon, Essex, received £500 for his club. “I have been volunteering at the football club for ten years and give up around 72 hours a month,” said Dave. “All of us at Wilburn Wanderers are really grateful for the award which will make a real difference to our group by helping us to actively promote the club to the community. The money will also go towards holding fun days for the girls to attend in their school holidays. “It is really great that BT recognises the ongoing commitment we volunteers give to our communities.” Beth Courtier, BT’s head of charity programmes, said: “We are proud of the many BT volunteers who really do make a difference to their local communities. Our BT Community Champions contribute directly to their neighbourhoods to strengthen them and their dedication is immense. We are delighted to support their volunteering efforts. These awards are just one way of showing how much we value our employees who actively volunteer.” All BT employees who have participated in voluntary work for more than 12 months can apply to become a BT Community Champion. Applying is easy and if successful, applicants could receive a cash grant of up to £500 or BT-branded sports kit for their group.
