Ofcom targets CO2 reduction

Environment montage

Ofcom has today (Friday) set out a target to reduce its annual level of carbon dioxide emissions by 25 per cent by 2012 and 50 per cent by 2020.

The target forms part of Ofcom’s Footprint project, which seeks to reduce the industry regulator’s carbon emissions across the entire organisation. Further audits will monitor progress in 2009 and 2011.

Ofcom said that, following the results of its first ever carbon audit for 2006-07, it intends to build on the initiatives it has already implemented by introducing a number of measures to further reduce its carbon emissions.

These include:

  • reducing power consumed by information systems

  • driving down energy consumption in buildings

  • reducing business travel and increasing use of conferencing technology

  • increasing flexible working

  • putting in place a low-carbon procurement strategy

  • further reducing paper consumption

  • further reducing the volume of waste sent to landfill by encouraging more recycling.

Ofcom chief executive Ed Richards said: “Ofcom takes its role in minimising its impact on the environment very seriously and looks forward to working with government and with its stakeholders to achieve the common goal of reducing our carbon emissions.”
