Apprentice Matthew Pearson was following in his dad’s footsteps when he joined colleagues to take part in this year’s BT Three Peaks Fellwalking Competition.

For dad Mike, who like Matthew works for BT Operate in Oswestry, was a member of the team that 15 years ago set the BT course record of 4hrs 1min - a record that still stands today.

Matthew was a last-minute recruit to the Fred Titmus IV this year after one of the original members had to pull out due to injury. With just two weeks to go before the event, he stepped in to make up the team with fellow apprentices Rob James and Mark Wood and colleague Anthony James.

“I got in some good practice with my dad but it wasn’t really enough,” said Matthew. “If I did it again next year I’d want to do more training - but it was still really good and I enjoyed it.”

The team took 16th place in the tough 24-mile annual hike with a time of 8hrs 29mins.

“We were pretty pleased because last year - when I didn’t take part - the team did it in 11hrs 30mins,” said Matthew.

Fellow Oswestry team Wizards from Oz - Paul Barnes, Artie Edmonds, Mark Swain and Phil James - completed the course in 8hrs 4mins, finishing joint 12th.

The Yorkshire-based challenge - taken at a walking or running pace - takes in the three tough peaks of Whernside, Ingleborough and Penyghent, starting in Horton-in-Ribblesdale.

Full results and details of how to enter next year’s competition can be found on the Three Peaks website.
