Ian claims functional separation has been beneficial for UK consumers.

BT chief executive Ian Livingston has responded to criticism Of BT's structure by Australian telco Telstra as the latter faces the possible separation of its retail and wholesale businesses.

Telstra claims countries that have tried to separate their incumbent telecoms operators have experienced only "dismal failures".

In an article published in The Australian, Ian claims functional separation has been beneficial for UK consumers as well as the UK market as a whole.

Ian said prices have been cut and competition has increased in the broadband market since the telecoms strategic review in 2005. “The UK now has the most diverse, competitive and vibrant communications market in the world," he said.

And he batted off criticism from other countries that are critical of functional separation by adding: “A lot of people from these countries tend to be critical of where we have come from but tend not to have the statistics we have."
