BT chairman Mike Rake wants a level playing field in Europe

BT chairman Mike Rake said today (Friday) the rest of Europe urgently needs to establish a level playing field that allows competition and innovation to flourish.

In a letter to the Financial Times (FT) published today, Mike writes about how he was encouraged to read an article in the paper on 9 July, which suggested large European telecoms groups could be forced to open up their networks in order to boost competition.

“The UK has clearly benefited from the functional separation of BT’s local network division, Openreach,” he writes.

“It has given Britain the most competitive broadband market in the world. The clarity and certainty this structure has delivered has unleashed unparalleled investment from a number of important players.”

Mike also stressed that, looking towards next-generation access, it will be vital Ofcom in the UK adheres to a “principle-based” approach that is focused on encouraging both competition and investment.

“If Europe is to deliver on the Lisbon agenda, and to realise its economic potential, we have to get this right. Speed is of the essence,” writes Mike.
