Ian talks strategy in Korea

Ian Livingston

Ian was interviewed by Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo

BT Group chief executive Ian Livingston has been setting out the company’s strategy in an interview with Korea's largest newspaper Chosun Ilbo.

In the article, Ian describes how BT has made the successful transformation from a national telecoms company to a global information technology corporation - where earnings per share have increased in every one of the last 24 quarters.

Talking about BT Vision - due to be launched in Korea this year - Ian said: “When we launched BT Vision in the UK our key differentiator was that our customers would not have to pay any subscription. This was a completely new business model from the satellite TV and cable TV companies operating in Britain which operate on a subscription-only basis.

“In the future we will build interactivity into our IPTV services, which is something that satellite broadcasters will simply never be able to offer as they will not have the return path that broadband can offer.

“That will make TV something that you can participate in rather than simply being a passive activity and it offers a whole new range of really exciting possibilities.”

Asked what is the next “transformation” of BT, Ian answered: “Business transformation is a process that doesn’t end. I am lucky enough to be working in an industry where the only constant is change. We need to be constantly responding to that to offer our customers the best possible service.

“We are becoming a software-driven company whose services can be delivered or changed at the click of a mouse rather than an engineer with a screwdriver. In a software-driven world the pace of change and innovation will accelerate rather than slow down. I find that an incredibly exciting prospect.”

And in terms of his priorities? “First and foremost comes customer service. There is nothing more important to me” he said.
