The new focus group will explore the impact of ICT on the environment

BT’s access network research leader Dave Faulkner has been elected chairman of a new International Telecommunication Union (ITU) focus group that will examine the impact of information communication technology (ICT) on the environment.
The focus group is part of the ITU’s telecommunication standardisation organisation (ITU-T) and was formed after a joint symposium staged by BT and the ITU-T in London last month. Dave said: “The focus group on ICT and climate change aims to maximise savings, both in the three per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions contributed directly by the ICT sector and indirectly through mitigation of the 97 per cent in other sectors - for example by using teleconferencing to reduce travel.” The focus group will work on recommendations so that ITU-T member organisations can adopt standard practices worldwide to save energy costs and reduce their carbon footprint. Dave will be chairman of the focus group initially until April 2009 when it reports on its results to the ITU-T Telecommunication Standardisation Advisory Group (TSAG). His election was supported by BT TSAG representatives, including BT head of international standards Keith Dickerson and ITU-T consultant Stewart Alexander. BT head of standards Keith Foster said: “This is a key position of influence which will enable BT to lead and shape the ICT industry’s response to the climate change imperatives in which global standards play a vital role.”
