Ann talks on transformation

Ann Caluwaerts: successful change needs to be radical

Making structural changes in a business is the subject of an interview with BT Global Services chief transformation officer Ann Caluwaerts in a leading Asia Pacific-based trade magazine.

In an article in MIS Asia, Ann talks about the transformation taking place within BT and BT Global Services - and how it’s important for businesses to make changes when they’re performing well rather than waiting until they hit problems.

“Our decision for transformation was a proactive choice as a global visionary company that recognised the need for change before the market demanded it,” she says.

“And, in the challenging market in which we operate today, we believe that successful change needs to be radical. There is no escaping the fact that carriers must transform their network and business model. Yet the market will not slow down to a halt while they do so.”

She says the continuing success of BT’s transformation from a traditional telecoms company can be seen in the growth of revenue from broadband and networked IT services - up seven per cent to 39 per cent for the third quarter of 2007-08, compared with the same period the year before.

She goes on to talk about the importance of the Asia Pacific region to BT’s transformation - and about transformation being a “journey” that will never end, but with the initial phase potentially taking three to four years.

“You will know that you are close when a customer naturally sees you as a colleague, as a business operator, and they can see how your solution has changed people’s lives,” she says.

“You will know you have the right behaviours when your own people change the way you operate instinctively to create a better business and social proposition.”
