BT Operate support technician Graham Barre is celebrating after being named a runner-up in the youth category of this year’s BT Chairman’s Awards.
Graham was presented with a cheque for £1,000 by chairman Mike Rake in recognition of his efforts in the community. For the past 22 years Graham has been involved with the 1119 (Shrewsbury) squadron Air Training Corps (ATC). The aim of the group is to foster and develop the qualities of good citizenship and leadership within young people. Graham’s £1,000 award will be used to help cadets whose financial situation would otherwise prevent them taking part in the more adventurous activities due to the cost of buying equipment. Each year the BT Chairman’s Awards receive applications from outstanding community champions who commit time, energy and talent for the benefit of society and their communities. These are shortlisted by a global judging panel from across BT and this year’s winners were personally chosen by Mike. He said: “I am very proud as the new chairman of BT to judge such outstanding applicants. The dedication of BT people is simply inspirational. It is imperative that we recognise and encourage our people throughout the UK and across the world and so I congratulate Graham and commend his selfless commitment to the 1119 Shrewsbury ATC.” Graham said he was thrilled with the achievement. “The skills I have developed throughout my career within BT and my time as squadron commanding officer with the group have been interchangeable, each one complementing the other,” he said. “I am honoured to have been shortlisted above all the other hundreds of entries from across the company.”
