Nottingham-based business provision manager Peter Cowell has been honoured with a BT Chairman’s Award - a recognition of his dedication to his local community.
Peter won one of this year’s new Emerging Impact awards - a category created to highlight the enthusiasm of people new to the voluntary sector who are already making a significant contribution. Peter has been involved with Incest and Sexual Abuse Survivors (ISAS) - a support and counselling service for adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse - for three years, and dedicates 24 hours of his time to the group each month. The objective of ISAS is to provide face-to-face and group counselling as well as a telephone helpline that support survivors of childhood sexual abuse, their partners and non-abusing family members throughout Nottinghamshire. As a volunteer counsellor, Peter offers weekly counselling sessions to clients and also acts as a mentor to new volunteers. His Chairman’s Award of £500 will go towards the training and support of volunteers who help with the counselling services. Each year the BT Chairman’s Awards scheme receives applications from outstanding community champions who commit time, energy and talent for the benefit of society and their communities. Following shortlisting by a global judging panel from across BT, this year’s category winners were personally chosen by Mike. He said: “I am very proud as the new chairman of BT to judge such outstanding applicants. The dedication of BT people is simply inspirational. It is imperative that we recognise and encourage our people throughout the UK and across the world and so I congratulate Peter and commend his selfless commitment to ISAS.” Peter was delighted with the recognition. He said: “Being involved with ISAS has been extremely valuable to both my personal and professional life. “To have my voluntary work recognised by my employer makes me feel valued as a person and an employee of BT.”
