Hair-raising way to collect cash
Wednesday July 30th 2008.   Posted: 09:30
An Openreach man has found a hair-raising way to collect cash for a charity trip to Bulgaria - and every excruciating moment is on YouTube for everyone to see . . .
Peter Sharrocks plans to set off on 5 September with other volunteers from the Communications Workers Union (CWU) in a wagon convoy taking help to an orphanage - and to raise money, he clenched his teeth and volunteered for a body-wax. Peter, who can be seen bravely outlining his charity trip while being waxed, said: “I got involved in April 2005, when they where seeking volunteers from the North East region of the CWU to put together a business plan, which we did. “I, along with Bob McGuire from Royal Mail, were chosen to take aid to the Ukraine. Since then I have just got a little more involved - in 2007 I went to Transnistria and this year we are off to Bulgaria. “We’re getting an empty wagon from BT and they will also supply the fuel. We then need to fill the wagon. We do this by doing sponsored events, asking the other union branches to help and getting in touch with local business and companies.” Peter, a frames technician and the union safety rep for Teesside and the Dales, will be setting off from either Hull or Newcastle. “This convoy will have ten wagons and for the first time we have wagons going from Ireland. We’re splitting the aid between orphanages, schools and hospitals,” he said. “The cost of the ferry is about £560 for the two drivers and the wagon, and we then need about £400 to cover accommodation while travelling. “All this comes from money raised - or most drivers usually pay the £400 for accommodation out of their own pocket. The trip will take up to three weeks, and my co-driver will be James McDermott, who works in Customer Service at Gosforth Park on technical support for BT Fusion - it will be his first convoy. “Our destination this year is Razdavitza, which is an orphanage caring for 73 children with an age range from five to 15. The majority are Roma gypsies, and many of the girls when they reach 14 to15 are forced to marry if they are not in care. “So what we are doing is only a little bit but I know that what money or aid we raise goes to where we need it because we deliver it direct to the places that need it and not to a main distribution point.” To sponsor Peter, you can call him on 0788 2303886 or e-mail him.
