Detector boost for Mary

A local community has rallied round in support of a Christmas hamper scheme run by Newport’s Mary Lockyer.

For the past 12 years, Mary has been collecting items for hampers and donating them to Age Concern, which distributes them to elderly people throughout Newport.

“When we delivered the hampers to the Age Concern office last year, they asked if I could help in providing some much-needed carbon monoxide monitors,” said Mary. “So I decided to try and include a monitor in every hamper that we donate this year. It’s a big task as the monitors cost around £20 each.”

But Mary’s determination is paying off - and she’s already received a big boost with 20 monitors being donated to her cause.

Five each have been donated by Fire and Safety Services - based in the Vale of Glamorgan - and Newport-based Firequip. And these have been matched with another ten detectors from Uskmouth Power.

Mary said: “Normally we have somewhere between 23 to 28 hampers - so when I heard that we have had 20 monitors donated from Uskmouth Power, Fire and Safety Services and Firequip (Newport) I was delighted. This is an enormous boost.”

Mary was also successful in her application for an Uskmouth Power community chest award, receiving £250 towards the hampers.

“The extra money from the community chest will now be used to provide some extra special goods in the food hampers,” said Mary.

Anyone wishing to help Mary with her hamper collections can call (01633) 231913 or contact her via e-mail.
