Tiny school makes big contribution

Internet Rangers session

Trevor Higgins gets an internet lesson from eight-year-old Gemma-Paige Pickersgill along with Gemma's mum Lesley Pickersgill

Pupils at North Lincolnshire’s smallest school swapped places with their teachers when they held an Internet Rangers session.

Wroot Travis Charity Church of England School has just 21 pupils, including three nursery pupils.

The children invited in their family members for an internet lesson at the school on the day. North Lincolnshire Council’s Digital Inclusion Unit and Extended Schools organised the event to enable the children to prove that you are never too old to learn a new skill and never too young to teach one.

Parents and grandparents were taught a variety of skills from how to use a mouse to how to use search engines to find information on a subject of interest.

BT Yorkshire regional manager Trevor Higgins went along to the school to see the event in action.

He said: “This event really proves that all ages can enjoy the internet and make the most of it - and it’s great to see a small school making such a big contribution to getting families online.”

BT sponsored the event, as part of the Internet Rangers scheme. Each young ‘ranger’ received a goodie bag from BT to reward them for helping older people get online, plus a certificate and badge for their work.
