Support super-fast broadband
Tuesday August 05th 2008.   Posted: 09:30
BT director for Wales, Ann Beynon, stressed the importance of “partnership” as plans were announced to roll out super-fast broadband to as many as ten million homes by 2012.
The proposed £1.5 billion investment in fibre-based services by BT will deliver top speeds of up to 100 Mb, with the potential for speeds of more than 1,000 Mb in the future. BT described the move as a bold step but said the investment was dependent on a "supportive and enduring" regulatory environment. It also wants to work with local and regional bodies to decide where and when it should focus the deployment of super-fast broadband. Ann said: "BT is keen to invest further in Wales so it is important that the Welsh public sector works with us to ensure the funds are directed to our country. "We are keen to partner with people who share our vision for the next phase of the broadband revolution - and we look forward to discussing with our Welsh partners ways we might work together to ensure super-fast broadband is built when and where it is most needed. "There is no predetermined single model, but we are keen to explore, for example, ways in which local demand can be created or stimulated to help shape and direct our investments. Our aim is that urban and rural areas alike will benefit from our investment so this is a big opportunity for all parts of Wales. "Broadband has boosted the Welsh economy and is an essential part of our customers’ lives. We now want to make a step-change in broadband provision which will offer faster speeds than ever before. This is a bold step by BT and we need others to be just as bold."
