Hosted visits to MIT help demonstrate successful collaboration with academia

BT has hosted a series of visits to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) by UK politicians.

The company says the visits demonstrate the wide-ranging benefits of successful collaborative relationships between industry and academia.

Chief research professional Steve Whittaker, from the BT Group chief technology office, is based at MIT and regularly hosts visits by high-level delegations from the UK as part of a close working relationship with the British Consulate General in Boston, Massachusetts.

Recent visitors have included the UK’s secretary of state for innovation, universities and skills John Denham, who was accompanied by Nigel Thrift, vice-chancellor of the University of Warwick.

Peter Luff MP led a delegation from the business and enterprise committee of the House of Commons - and David Willetts, shadow secretary of state for innovation, universities and skills, has also visited Steve at MIT this year.

Steve also regularly hosts groups from the devolved authorities, regional development agencies and a wide range of government departments.

Steve said: “An introduction to BT’s long-standing relationship with MIT is becoming a regular feature of visits by key British politicians and civil servants seeking to understand the vibrant innovation ecology in the Boston area and how it drives competitiveness.

“The visits enable us to showcase BT’s best practice in building a successful collaboration between business and academia and usually include a discussion of our innovation strategy and a tour of the MIT media labs.”
