DQ stats show relevance of maths
Tuesday August 26th 2008.   Posted: 09:35
The statistical methods used by directory enquiries (DQ) to measure call handling have been helping youngsters understand the importance of maths in everyday life.
Team manager David Webb put percentages and averages into context for the pupils when he took part in a maths at work day at The Priory School Business and Enterprise College in Shrewsbury. With the help of colleague Mark Smith, he showed the 14 to 16-year-olds that what they’re learning in the classroom now could help them in years to come. “I did a presentation based on the number of calls that come in, call handling times and the quality of calls and then asked the students questions around three scenarios to see what they’d understood,” said David. “I explained to them it was something I do every day because I have to produce performance statistics - I wanted to show them that maths can be very relevant to their job in the future.” David and Mark were representing BT among a number of companies that took part in the event. As a result, they have now been asked to attend a careers evening. “We’ll be promoting our local opportunities, but it will also be a chance to highlight BT generally as an employer,” said David.
