Francois to free up knowledge

Francois

"The time when people could make a career and keep their knowledge to themselves is over", says Francois

BT Global Services chief executive Francois Barrault has shared plans for the roll-out of an internal networking environment - similar to Facebook - in an interview with German newspaper Handelsblatt.

Francois says: “The time when people could make a career and keep their knowledge to themselves is over. The young people we employ don’t accept that any more. You cannot motivate them through controlled leadership. I believe in treating my colleagues as adults.”

He told the daily newspaper - targeted at economists - that the network would not only change the way employees work and interact with each but would also support BT’s goal to be an “open company”, both internally and externally.

But he admitted: ““Of course, it’s easier to establish knowledge exchange in a start-up with 50 people.”

In the article - headlined Facebook for the Office - Francois also talks about his strategy for BT Global Services and suggests that BT’s continued growth in Asia will more than make up for the downturn in the USA and UK.

The article predicts BT Global Services will become the company’s top-selling line of business.

It concludes: “Francois knows that profitability is where there is work to do. He has thinned the management and is now vowing to only do new IT outsourcing business if contracts pay off in the foreseeable future.”
