Celebrating winning gold at the European Track Masters event at Manchester’s Velodrome Arena is Jimmy Rutherford.
Jimmy, of the 21st century network integration and test team in Manchester, won gold and the European Champion title after beating off stiff opposition. Jimmy has been a regular cyclist since 1971 and over the years has competed in many disciplines of cycling at all levels from local club to professional. His main event is the Point Race - a race of 60 laps with a sprint for the line every ten laps. Given the distance and sprinting requirements of this race, riders need to have endurance, speed and an ability to read the race to maintain a good position in the field. To add to the excitement, a rider also can gain ten points at any time, by lapping the other riders. In the European Track Masters event Jimmy gave a gritty performance when he lead Ian Humphries to a British one-two. He missed out completely in the first sprint, won the second but then scored only a single point in the third. Deciding that gaining a lap would be his only chance, he took with him Ian and France’s Didier Ramet, who had only five points at the time. Jimmy won the fifth sprint and his points tally meant he could not be beaten. He attributes his success to applying masterful determination to a well-thought-out strategy. “I also follow a rigorous daily training programme to work on my fitness,” said Jimmy. “I’m now trying to gain sponsorship to take part in the world championships in Sydney, Australia, in October. “Success in the World Masters would be the pinnacle of my cycling career and allow me the privilege of wearing the world champion’s jersey forever.”
