BT engineer Euan Teviotdale is celebrating after the pipe band in which he is a drummer won a gold medal in the World Pipe Band Championships.

Euan - who only took up drumming two years ago - performed along with fellow members of the MacKenzie Caledonian Pipe Band at the championships in Glasgow, which attracts 8,000 pipers and drummers from 16 countries.

The Dundee-based band was already riding high - having won its category in this year’s British and European pipe band championships.

And, for tenor-drummer Euan, the wins have been a real family affair because performing alongside him were his 15-year-old son Ross and 18-year-old daughter Laura.

Euan said: “My son joined the band three years ago and I used to take him to practice. One day someone left the band and I was asked if I would like to try drumming - I’ve never looked back and my daughter has since joined too.

“We were under a lot of pressure to win the world championships - having already won the other titles - so we were all both relieved and elated when we achieved it.

“I feel very lucky to have got so far in such a short time, considering there are lots of drummers and pipers who try for many years to win these titles.”

The band was presented with a trophy by Linda Fabiani, the Scottish government’s minister for Europe, external affairs and culture, in front of a crowd of 40,000 spectators.

To seal their success, members of the band need to finish either first or second in their category later this month at the largest of Scotland’s highland games - The Cowal Highland Gathering - and win the coveted title Champion of Champions.
