Students from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Khalifa University of Science, Technology and Research (KUSTAR) have been given a unique insight into the research and innovation work carried out within the BT Group chief technology office (GCTO).
The ten students - who are in their final year of study for a Bachelor of Engineering degree in computer, electronic or telecom engineering - spent ten days at the GCTO’s intelligent systems research centre (ISRC) at Adastral Park in Suffolk. They were given a series of technical lectures relevant to information communication technology (ICT) research and innovation within BT - and carried out mini projects in order to put into practice their skills and newly-acquired knowledge. Nader Azarmi, head of the ISRC, said: “The Middle East region is an important growth area for BT and we are rapidly growing our open innovation engagement with the region’s leading industrial and academic organisations. “The hosting of KUSTAR students is in line with BT’s commitment and objectives in the Middle East region in general - and the UAE in particular.” Dr Jamal Zemerly from KUSTAR, who supervised the students during their visit, said: “The training was excellent in terms of the projects given to the students, the seminars and the technical visit to BT's customer centre at Adastral Park.” Basim Majeed, a group leader within the ISRC who co-ordinated activities during the visit, said: “The students benefited greatly from rubbing shoulders with our researchers. “And their performance during the project work was an indication of why KUSTAR courses and degrees are the first to be accredited by the UK Institute of Engineering and Technology in the Gulf region.”
