A big Welsh welcome for Jerry

BT Design people in Wales gave a big welcome to Jerry Hubbard when he visited Cardiff.

With almost 40 per cent of BT Design people based in Wales working in BT Global Services service design (GSDD), there was a special request for Jerry, who is vice-president of client design services, to host meetings at the International Data Centre in Cardiff Bay.

Events are scheduled all over the country as a way for leaders to meet regularly a wide range of people from across BT Design. It’s very much a two-way communication, with local teams gaining a better understanding of BT Design’s strategy and plans for the future, and senior managers learning about the successes and barriers experienced by local teams.

“It’s about cutting through the red tape, so that we can directly discuss our own views and opinions with senior BT Design leaders. We gain an insight into the decisions and thought processes behind the strategy and it gives us a way to influence the execution of the strategy,” said Sian-Nia Davies, GSSD project manager, who organised Jerry’s visit.

“It’s also a great networking opportunity and gives us a chance to meet with a cross-section of friends and colleagues working in all types of technical areas,” she said.

Cardiff had a very well attended event, with Jerry combining a presentation with a Q&A session.

“Jerry was keen to encourage audience participation and this resulted in lots of shared ideas and debate.”

Topics covered were as divers as ‘How can we raise awareness of BT Design’s capabilities and offerings to the external market to our colleagues in other lines of business?’ to ‘How can we reuse more of our proven capabilities and reduce the investment needed in trouble-to-resolve to concentrate on potential revenue earning areas?’

Before meeting local senior managers for lunch, Jerry also had an opportunity to meet BT director for Wales Ann Beynon to discuss cross-line of business activities taking place in Wales, including the BT Wales Board and the Gwydion Research and Development Partnership between BT, the Welsh Assembly Government and universities in Wales.

The next venue on a packed day was the BT Cardiff Showcase, a state-of-the art presentation suite created in 2007 for promoting BT’s capabilities to major customers and key opinion formers. A quick tour of the facility was followed by a round table meeting with a selection of BT Design people, where in-depth discussions took place on a wide range of topics including resourcing, graduate recruitment, collaboration opportunities and BT Design/BT Global Services relationships.

To round off the day Jerry was presented with a Wales mug and Welsh cakes to celebrate his first-ever visit to Wales.

Jerry said: “I have found today extremely enlightening and am completely motivated by the level of professionalism here in Cardiff, which supports some of BT’s most demanding accounts. BT Cardiff is a testament to what we can achieve when we truly harness the power of our people and knowledge.”
