Ron’s delight over crash mum

Ron Williams

Ron held the woman’s head straight until the emergency services arrived

A young mother who was seriously injured in a car accident is finally on the mend - a month after Openreach new sites representative Ron Williams gave her potentially life-saving help at the scene.

Ron was driving from his home to his first call of the day at Ebbw Vale in South Wales when he noticed a car turned on its side in the hedge.

“Two cars in front of me had flown straight past it - but the road is notorious for the dumping of stolen vehicles,” said Ron. “I slowed down though and, as I did so, I could see there was someone inside.”

Ron said the woman was hanging in the air, held only by her seatbelt. He felt her head through a broken window and realised she was still alive - although she was bleeding heavily - and called the emergency services from his mobile.

After taking instructions from the ambulance service, Ron leaned over the roof of the car and reached through the window to hold her head straight to help her breathe more easily. He remained in that position until the fire and ambulance services arrived. He also talked to the woman throughout and tried to clear her airway of blood with his finger.

By the time a fire officer was able to take over, Ron said his arms were struggling with the weight of the woman’s head and he was covered with her blood.

“I was quite shaken - by the incident itself, by the fact two cars had gone by without the drivers realising someone was hurt, and by the fact it brought back memories of when I was involved in a head-on collision in 2002 that left me hospitalised and off work for five months,” he said.

The woman, who Ron says has a young teenaged child, had broken two bones in her neck. She was in a coma in intensive care for a month but is now conscious and able to sit up.

“I’m over the moon she’s going to pull through,” said Ron. “Whether or not it’s because of me she survived I don’t know - but I’m glad I was able to help.”

New sites manager for Wales Martin Morgan has praised Ron for his handling of the situation.

“Ron's prompt action gave the woman a fighting chance,” he said. “Had he not stopped that day and done what he did, who knows what might have happened?”
